Want to relieve stress? A method that will help you more than meditation

Don't wait until stress makes your body and mind sick! With this method, you will be able to relax faster than if you meditated, at least that's what experts say.

Cyclic breathing is an ancient but recently studied technique to help people cope with the stress caused by the pandemic. The benefits of cycling breathing were also proven in a study published in Cell Reports Medicine.

What does this technique include?

This technique involves controlled breathing while the body and mind relax. According to The Healthy, this method is considered more effective than meditation because there is no risk of increased anxiety levels, as can happen in the case of people who have experienced trauma. “Meditation can increase anxiety in beginners or people with trauma,” says Serena Garefino, a meditation teacher.

The specialist says this technique can be better than meditation, especially when we want to reduce short-term stress, such as that caused by an argument at work, stress caused by traffic or stress caused by fear of failure. Instead, for visible effects, meditation should be done 8 times a month, says Serena Garefino.

How to practice cyclic breathing at home

This technique can be practiced both at home and as part of a breathing course. However, it is recommended that you seek help from a licensed therapist first. A simple method would be:

  1. You sit on a yoga mat, on a chair, in front of a mirror, or in another comfortable place;
  2. You close your eyes and take a deep breath;
  3. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, then hold your breath for 4 seconds;
  4. Repeat the procedure 3-4 times for 5 minutes.

The secret is to practice this technique regularly, for example in the morning or when you want to overcome a stressful moment. “Don't be fooled by how simple this practice is. This is important and can change your life!” Serena Garefino urges.
