A New Chapter in the History of Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami

Nearly two decades after their first, truly iconic collaboration, Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and fashion house Louis Vuitton are joining forces again. This time, the legendary Capucines bag serves as a playground for their boundless imagination. The result is a stunning collection presented in a surreal setting at Art Basel Paris, where fashion and high art merged in a single, colorful whirlwind.

Louis Vuitton's Artycapucines project has long established itself as a unique platform where the iconic bag becomes a canvas for today's boldest artists. In the seventh chapter of this initiative, the house once again turns to the genius of Murakami, a master who effortlessly blends pop art, anime aesthetics, and Japanese painting traditions. The result of this creative collaboration are eleven unique interpretations of the Capucines. These are more than just accessories. They are collectible art objects.

In close dialogue with Louis Vuitton designers, Murakami approached the task not as a design, but as a sculpture. Familiar motifs of his universe—smiling flowers, pandas, psychedelic mushrooms, and, of course, the multicolored monogram—were given a new, three-dimensional embodiment. Each bag tells its own story:

• Capucines East West Rainbow — this is a literal transformation of the bag into the artist’s signature smiling flower.
• Mini Mushroom covered in a forest of miniature mushrooms, 3D printed and then painstakingly hand-embroidered onto mirror leather.
• Mini Tentacle transforms the character Mr. DOB into a bizarre octopus.
• Panda clutchCast from silver-plated brass and encrusted with over six thousand crystals, it looks more like a precious exhibit from a treasure trove than an everyday accessory.

Launched in 2019, the Artycapucines project has already collaborated with such art scene titans as Henry Taylor, Paola Pivi, and Beatriz Milhazes. However, Murakami's return is a special occasion. It was his revolutionary redesign of the LV monogram in 2003 that forever changed the fashion landscape, proving that art could be found not only in museums but also on the catwalk and in wardrobes.

The collection's presentation took place on a fittingly grand scale. For Art Basel Paris, Louis Vuitton staged a total installation in the Grand Palais, immersing viewers in the artist's world. The central figure of the space was a giant, eight-meter-tall octopus, modeled after traditional Chinese lanterns. It was truly spectacular.

The floor was covered with a carpet depicting its tentacles, and from the creature's glowing head, the famous "Medusa Eyes" motif from 2001 peered out at visitors. The atmosphere was simultaneously theatrical, grandiose, and surprisingly intimate, once again demonstrating Murakami's talent for transforming subconscious fears into something vibrant and playful.

Eleven bags from the new collection were displayed within the giant tentacles. They sat alongside his famous spherical "Plush Balls" sculptures, which surrounded viewers with a kaleidoscopic field of color and texture. This juxtaposition drew a direct parallel between art and craft, demonstrating that in the hands of the artist, a Capucines bag becomes as much a work of art as his paintings or sculptures.

This exhibition is more than just a product launch. It is a continuation of the long-standing dialogue between Louis Vuitton and the contemporary art world, which began in the 1920s with commissions from Gaston-Louis Vuitton and continues today through collaborations with the most iconic figures of our era.

Murakami's installation is living proof of how a partnership between a brand and an artist can expand the boundaries of luxury, transforming it into an ongoing conversation about creativity, craftsmanship, and imagination. The story that began on the catwalk in 2003 has received a brilliant continuation.

The Artycapucines VII collection, unveiled on October 21st at Art Basel Paris, will be released in a strictly limited edition and will undoubtedly become a sought-after item for collectors worldwide.
