Bed Decorating Tips

The bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom, so how it is dressed is an integral part of the décor.

While the most important factor to consider when designing a bed is the usefulness and comfort of all the elements, it's also convenient to think about its aesthetics. Here are some tips on how to beautifully and practically decorate the bed.

How to choose bedding

When choosing bedding (sheets, duvets, duvet covers…) the following main factors should be considered:

Size: It is important that the bedding matches the size of the mattress. If you buy a sheet that is too large, there will be too much fabric left and it is more likely to wrinkle; and if you buy them too small, they will look bad and you will practically sleep on the mattress. Therefore, if the bed is 160 cm, the bed linen should be the same size. However, if you want your duvet or bedspread to hang off the floor, you will need to choose a size larger than your bed size.

Fabric: For those elements of the bed that will be in contact with the body, it is important to choose fabrics that are pleasant to the touch and soft. The most recommended bedding fabrics are cotton, linen and silk. In winter, it can be useful to choose flannel, and in summer, satin.

Design: The last element to consider when choosing bedding is color and pattern. To select the most suitable design, factors such as the style of the bedroom, existing colors, possible combination with curtains and carpets, etc. must be taken into account.

Elements for decorating the bed

When it comes to decorating a bed, it's not just the sheets, bedspreads and comforters that need to be considered, but also the range of accessories that can be added. The elements covering the bed are:

Sheets: These are usually not visible because they are covered with duvets or bedspreads, so there is no need to combine them with the rest.

Quilt, duvet cover or comforter: These are the most visible items as they cover the entire bed. They can be hidden under a mattress or hung on the floor.

Pillows: These are more practical than decorative, as their function is to provide a good rest for the head. However, they do have a few aesthetic options, as you have to choose the number of pillows, their covers, and their placement (flat or vertical, next to the headboards).

Throw Pillows: Their function is mainly decorative, although they can be useful for lying on the bed for reading or watching TV. Increasingly, multiple pillows are combined on a bed, although it is not recommended to have more than four or five pillows. They should be arranged from largest to smallest, starting from the side closest to the headboard.

Bedside Blanket: This is a blanket or blanket placed at the foot of the bed. To make it look good, it needs to be folded and positioned from the middle of the bed to the foot of the bed. Its width can be the same as the width of the bed. This accessory not only looks good, but is also practical, as it provides additional protection at night.

Design ideas and color choices

All bedding items should match each other and the rest of the room. Within this rule, the options are varied: you can choose one tone for everything, you can play with different prints, you can choose white… Here are some ideas how to decorate your bed:

White on white: This color conveys purity and relaxation, and also highlights the light. To make it less bland, you can add pillows or other colorful accessories.

Neutral colors to convey calmness: neutral colors, white and beige, give the bedroom a touch of peace and serenity.

Smooth and soft tones for bedrooms where there are already strong patterns.

Reversible Duvet Covers: Allows you to change decor by simply flipping the duvet over. They usually have a solid color on one side and a patterned side on the other.

Bright colors balance white furniture: if the bedroom furniture is neutral, the bed can be dressed in bright colors (fuchsia, yellow, orange…) to draw attention.

Single Color: You can choose the same color as the bedding curtains. However, you should not use the same tone, but combine different color intensities.

Combine geometric shapes or prints: different patterns can coexist on the bed, but always use soft colors and be careful not to overload it. In any case, it is not recommended to use more than four different models on a bed.
