Ana Ofelia Murguia, the Mexican actress who voiced the title character in Disney and Pixar's Coco, died on Sunday, December 31, at the age of 90. This was announced by the National Institute of Fine Arts and Letters of Mexico on social networks.

“It is with deep sadness that we regret the tragic death of lead actress Ana Ofelia Murguía, who was part of the permanent cast of the National Theater Company of Mexico and whose artistic career was vital to the performing arts in Mexico,” the institution said on X (formerly Twitter).

Ana Ofelia Murguia was born in Mexico City in 1933 and studied acting at the National School of Theater Arts of Mexico. Her first role was in the play "Trial by Fire" in 1954, and her first role on the small screen was in the film "Transit" in 1964. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the Ariel Awards, Most Important Performance by an Actor. awards in Mexico in 1979, 1986 and 1996 for films such as Queen of the Night.

The actress received the Golden Ariel Award.

She was nominated three more times for Best Supporting Actress and holds the record for Best Actress nominations without a win, having been nominated five times.

Ana Ofelia Murguía provided not only the voice, but also the real emotions of the character Mama Coco in the 2017 film, which tells the story of a young boy who enters the underworld during the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos and discovers a family secret. “Coco,” produced by Disney and Pixar, won two Oscars: for best animated feature and for best original song, “Remember Me,” which Murguia sings at the end of the film in a duet with Miguel, Coco’s great-grandson. .
