Knowing how to speak multiple foreign languages is indeed a valuable skill, but what can be even more remarkable is knowing the following languages that are difficult to learn.

Learning a new language is said to improve outlook and nonverbal communication, helping the brain adapt and respond to new circumstances. Those looking to learn a foreign language may want to start with an easier one, such as Spanish or Italian, but the next one on Far and Wide's list may prove more appealing.

Top most difficult foreign languages to learn

Finnish is the 10th most difficult foreign language because “it has complex conjugations” and words can easily change their meaning depending on how they are written.

In 9th place in the top is the Hungarian language, which is spoken in Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. Hungarian words are very long and in most cases can be similar to prepositions. For example, the longest word in the Hungarian language is “megszentségétéríthetelnetségeskedéseitekért”, consisting of 44 letters.

In 8th place is Icelandic, a complex language consisting of “extremely long words and confusing conjugations.” 7th place is occupied by the Hindi language, which is spoken in India, Fiji and Pakistan. The language is difficult to learn because the written version lacks phonetic notations to help students understand how to pronounce words.

In 6th place is Vietnamese, in 5th place is Thai, and in 4th place is Korean.

Among the most difficult foreign languages is Japanese, which ranks 3rd on the list. This language contains tens of thousands of characters called "kanji". Also, how words are pronounced depends on the situation. As a result, one word can be translated in 10 ways.

In second place is Arabic, which is written from right to left and excludes most vowels from words. In addition, Arabic has various special sounds that many other languages do not have, and verbs come before the subject.

At the top of this list is Mandarin, a dialect of Chinese spoken in the northern part of China. The language requires memorizing thousands of special characters. Additionally, each word can be pronounced four different ways, and each pronunciation has a different meaning.
