The secret of miracles from the Djurgeni Monastery

28 kilometers from the city of Roman in Nyametsky district there is a miraculous icon of the Djurgeni Monastery, which attracts, like a magnet, hundreds of people who place their hope in the Mother of God for healing. The news of the miracles performed here spread throughout the country.

The Djurgeni Monastery, custodian of the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, is also dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It can be found in the locality of the same name, Giurgeni, in the commune of Valea Ursului, Neamta County. This is a monastery of the Orthodox rite, which is under the jurisdiction of Archpriest Romanul. The monastic settlement exists today thanks to two nobles named Ionita and Gheorghita Stagie from the village of Giurgeni. They donated part of their estate to Bishop Gideon Romansky for the construction of a monastery. This happened on October 17, 1738. Since the 18th century, the site of the new monastery has been the site of a monastic settlement, first documented as a hermitage, built in 1721 by a handful of Greek monks.

Monastic life stopped for decades

Initially, the monastery was dedicated to the Beheading of John the Baptist, and its first abbot was named Benjamin. Between 1739 and 1740 construction of the first wooden church began. Among the icons brought here for the first time, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, the icon of the Savior Jesus Christ, the icon of St. John the Baptist and the icon of St. Nicholas have survived to this day. There was a custom here to bury abbots, abbesses and abbesses in the porch. That’s why two old graves remain here today. In 1810, construction began on the stone-and-brick church.

Since 1959, with the entry into force of the law on the secularization of monastic property, monastic life was stopped by the communists. During this period, the nuns were sent into exile, the buildings attached to the church were demolished, and only the church remained. It was only reopened in 1993, when it also became a convent. Since 2000, the monastery in Djurgeni became monastic again, and in 11 years seven people lived in it.

The restoration of the monastery was carried out in 2005, when the extensions destroyed in the past were erected.

The icon was transformed without human intervention

One of the most famous fragrances of our monasteries is the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Djurgeni, also called the “Icon of the Mother of God with Three Eyes”, the Guide or Hodegetria. The Virgin Mary is represented with the baby Jesus on her left hand, pointing to Him, the One who is the Guide to God.

Unlike other images of the Virgin Mary, here she is depicted with a third eye, somewhat more erased on the left side, and with a second half-open mouth. About this third eye, the former abbot of the monastery said that it is the one who observes the world with mercy and kindness.

Up close, the icon appears to depict the Blessed Virgin Mary with double eyes, which is why many call it “the icon of the Mother of God with five eyes and two mouths.” It was not so painted, but took on a new appearance over time, without anyone's intervention, which emphasized the miracles associated with it.

Miracles on the Maslu service

Many believers come to this icon with hope all year round, but especially on the great holidays dedicated to the Mother of God and August 6, the Transfiguration of the Lord. In 1831, on August 6, an icon was donated to the Giurgen Monastery, which at that time was a women's monastery. It is assumed that the date was chosen precisely in connection with the change in the face of the Virgin Mary on the proposed icon.

Over time, the nuns and nuns realized that the icon began to work miracles and more and more Christians took the path of the monastery. Former abbot Anthony Geflea testified that he witnessed the healing of a mute child after participating in the Sacrament of Saint Olive in the monastery. After he was able to speak, the child asked to be raised to the icon and put his forehead on it.

Every two weeks, on the night from Thursday to Friday, dozens of believers gather around the holy icon and take part in the service of Holy Oil to relieve their physical and mental pain.
