They put soup in its infusion! What happened to the patient?

When you are sick, even your doctor often recommends soup. But what happens when we get a portion of the soup directly into the infusion?

In 2012, an elderly patient admitted to a hospital in Brazil was given an infusion of the soup and it dramatically changed how she felt. Ilda Vitor Maciel from Rio de Janeiro was hospitalized due to paralysis on the left side of her body as a result of a stroke.

At the Santa Casa de Barra Manza hospital in Rio de Janeiro, with her rather serious problem, Ilda received soup through a tincture strapped to her arm, rather than through the tube through which she was supposed to be fed. The nurse caring for her lost her tubes, HuffPost claims. With what result?

The woman died as a result of a health accident, which the victim's family reported to the police and appealed in court. Just half a day later, 88-year-old Maciel died. The hospital where she was admitted admitted that a mistake had been made regarding their patient, but the medical representatives of the clinic denied that it was because of their mistake that the poor woman died. The hospital administration maintained its position even after the autopsy, Fox Law Philly reports.

The Brazilian newspaper Globo claims that Maciel's daughter, Ana Rute Maciel dos Santos, was in the very room where all the madness happened. The nurse administered the soup to the patient through a catheter attached to Maciel's arm, rather than directing the food through the woman's feeding tube inserted into her nose.

Immediately after the mistake occurred, Dos Santos told The Saturday Standard: "The mother's heart started pounding, so I got scared and called the nurse." The idea is that before the error occurred, the patient was recovering from a stroke.

Medical personnel began treatment for the patient as soon as they noticed a deterioration in her health, but the woman died 12 hours later.

According to her medical record compiled by a doctor, Maciel died from a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lung. However, the woman's death certificate does not indicate the cause of her death. It was because of this unknown that the Santa Casa de Barra Manza Hospital requested an autopsy.

Hospital administrative director Alvaro Afonso Torres de Freitas said: “Due to the misunderstandings and the remaining mystery, we decided to investigate the case. An internal investigation has been launched and the process is well underway.” Will anything become clear after the investigation is completed? Weak chances! Many malpractice cases remain unsolved in Brazil, as in other less developed countries.
