According to Rider's Digest, 90% of adult coffee drinkers drink their first cup in the morning when they wake up.

When you wake up, your body is filled with cortisol, the stress hormone that makes you feel alert. Since cortisol levels are at their peak, drinking coffee may reduce the restorative effects of caffeine.

Instead, to get the best benefits from coffee, some experts recommend drinking coffee in the afternoon or early in the day. In other words, from the moment you wake up to the first cup of coffee, 2 to 4 hours should pass.

How much caffeine should you drink?

But it's the amount of caffeine you consume that matters most, not when you consume it, says nutritionist Melanie Dellinges. She recommends limiting your intake to two to four cups per day.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that a healthy adult can typically drink up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, the equivalent of about four or five cups of coffee, without any side effects.
